Twilight Princess Game Review The darkest and most serious of the Nintendo 3D Zelda games Twilight Princess pushes the limits of graphical presentation to its limit on the Wiis hardware Its darker and more disturbing than The Wind Waker There arent any bugeyed pigs nor effeminate Pirates Link is pulled into a parallel dimension known as Twilight Realm where he transforms into a Hylian and a wolf while being guided by Midna Gameplay Twilight Princess is the thirteenth installment in The Legend of Zelda series It was released on the Nintendo GameCube and Wii systems in the year 2006 Reviewers praised the game giving it excellent scores in a variety of publications including 1UP CVG EGM and GamesRadar It is considered by many as the top games in the entire franchise and it was the topselling Zelda game on the PAL market Twilight Princess features a naturalistic stylized graphics style similar to Ocarina of Time Majoras Mask and Ocarina of Time but with a more sophisticated graphic engine Twilight princess is the first game in the series to have the full directional control system instead of having a fixed perspective like previous games This change was made to accommodate the Wii consoles pointingbased interface The GameCube version features a section at the back of the game with mirrorimage maps for those who prefer a fixed view Upon entering the Twilight Realm Link is transformed into a wolf and comes across Midna an unidentified creature She informs Link that the kingdom of Hyrule is being taken over by a group of shadow beasts commanded by the evil sorcerer Zant She also explains that she is the true ruler of Twili but was usurped by Zant and cursed to her current form A short cutscene shows soldiers being killed by shadow creatures when Link and Midna arrive at Hyrule Castle Link and Midna then escape from the castle by an escape tunnel that leads to the Twilight Realm Link can move more freely in the Twilight Realm by using his wolf form holmestrail can also use his senses to navigate the world For instance he could sense the spirits of dead soldiers and other animals in the distance Link can also pull grass from specific patches and whistle using it to summon an animal such as a Hawk or Epona Link can also whistle near the patches to summon an identical animal Twilight Princess is no different from previous Zelda games in that music plays an important role Link can use an instrument of music such as the flute or harp to attract and summon various animals He can also use his voice to command the wolfs appearance He can also use his compass as a guide to help him navigate through the world Characters The Legend of Zelda series is filled with colorful characters that leave an unforgettable impression on players From hands coming out of toilets to pirates traversing vast oceans these wacky and unique characters are the heart of the game Twilight Princess continues the tradition of previous games by introducing a wide range of memorable characters In the course of the story Link meets new NPCs that are not just fascinating but also credible Its a major step towards the right direction that many of these NPCs actually play a part in the story instead of just being a victim NPCs like Rusl who explains that the forest is more risky now and kidnaps children or the Ordon villager who disguises himself as a wolf while the kids are kidnapped all have distinct personalities Other notable characters include Iza who runs the Boat Rental Cabin and Izas Rapid Ride in the Lanayru Province Louise the cat of Telma who helps Wolf Link locate a secret passageway through her bar as well as sewer system that leads to the castle and Faron whose spirit helps guide Link and Midna to the Forest Temple in the Eldin Province The duo defeats the Fused Shadow possessed by Diababa and obtains the first Tear of Light Midna the princess of the Twilight Realm is also one of the most fascinating characters in the game She can switch between her wolf and human forms and is a part of the Triforce of Wisdom She is friends with Link and informs him of her adventures in the twilight realm and how she defeated Zant the king of Twilight Zant who possesses the other half of the Triforce of Wisdom is an evil sorcerer and the ruler of the Twilight Realm He was banished to the Twilight Realm by the goddesses for stealing their land and depriving the people Zants magic enables him to remain in wolf form but Midna removes the power and allows him to transform into his human form as required The game also has an improved horse called Epona which is mounted in Hylian and wolf forms Link can whistle near specific patches of grass to call the animal similar to Majoras Mask Twilight Princess is the first game in the series where the player can identify their horse Theme Music is an important part of any Zelda title It can make a game feel vast exciting expansive and captivating Twilight Princess soundtrack is criticised for being inconsistent and intermittent that doesnt capture certain emotions Ocarina of Time Majoras Mask and other games have captivating compositions that bloom at the perfect moment to give you a sense of grandness and eerie Toru Minegishi and Asuka Ohta were responsible for the sound design and music in Twilight Princess with Koji Kondo overseeing the seriess composers for the first time since Wind Waker The soundtrack to Twilight Princess is a radical departure from the typical approach to the show with a an approach that is minimalist to music and arrangements Most field and dungeon themes start with a single instrument creating an eerie and mysterious ambiance for the player Midnas lament for instance is a song that uses a keyboard to induce a sense of sadness in the player The most prominent examples are dungeon themes with a dull atmosphere This is evident in the Twilight Realm theme which features a soundscape that could fit in the soundtrack to a David Lynch film The ominous and unsettling nature of this track is accentuated by the lack of recognisable melodies and traditional arrangement with dreary drones and bizarre patterns intertwining to create a dark gloomy texture A more uplifting and joyous song is Links hometown theme Faron Woods The tune makes use of various soft tones and stringed instruments to evoke an idyllic sense of safety and peace for the player The song has a subtle nod to the most wellknown scene from the franchise since it features a thematic riff thats similar to the iconic melody that plays at Ocarina of Times beginning There are also some dynamic songs in Twilight Princess that change depending on the location of the player in the game what theyre doing and the events that are taking place Hyrule Castle Town has different versions of the theme for each area of the town Central Square for instance features a more raucous version These variations are a great touch that helps to add a sense of depth and immersion into the world of Hyrule Story The story of Twilight Princess revolves around Link trying to prevent Hyrule from being sucked into the corrupted dimension known as the Twilight Realm To accomplish this he assumes the form of a Hylian and an Wolf as well as being assisted by a woman called Midna Midna was the original ruler of Twili but she was supplanted and cursed by Zant into her imp form Link and Midna are told by the Ancient Sages that only defeating Ganondorf will be in a position to release them from their curse The Sages reveal that the Mirror of Twilight is the source of the darkness that exists in the Twilight Realm Midna and Link journey to the Spirits Spring where they encounter predatory creatures that kidnap children Utilizing Wolf Links keen sense of smell they track the childrens scent to a bridge before they cross into the Twilight Realm They enter the Forest Temple and battle Diababa obtaining the first Fused Shadow Following this Faron informs them that the next stop is Eldin Province to the west Wii or east GCN Midna at the Lakebed Temple of Lanayru teleports Link to a fiery rock and then uses her powers on the ice below Lake Hylia The spirit of Rutela the recently deceased Zora Queen Rutela then appears and tells Link that he must visit the Lakebed Temple in order to gain access to the treasures of Zora Returning from Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask The horse Epona can again be riding in Twilight Princess Link can choose the name of the horse unlike the predetermined names in the previous games Midna and Link can retrieve the remaining Mirror Shards once they arrive in the Twilight Realm At the Palace of Twilight the Sages inform them that Midna is actually the real ruler of the Twili but she had been ostracized by the monarchy and was turned into an idol for power The Sages tell them that they can only be defeated by Ganondorf when they bring him to light and break the pact made between the Twilight kingdom and the Hyrule kingdom
